5 Common Marketing Excuses – And How to Turn Them Into Business Success

1. ‘It’s not for businesses like mine’ Businesses big or small should include marketing as an integral part of their yearly business plan. It’s the third most important aspect of maintaining business success. Many businesses assume that once they are up and open people will just come knocking on their door. However, experience has taught me that nobody knows who or where you are unless you tell him or her! Sounds simple but it is amazing how many businesses fail every year because of this simple assumption. Remember there is always another business just waiting to take your place. Marketing is for everyone. 2. ‘We don’t have time’ Quite simply – make time! The first thing to do is review your business, products or services. Focus on areas that need bringing to your customers’ attention. It’s amazing how many businesses don’t think ahead. Hiring a brand and marketing professional to help you create a simple marketing plan will help you manage deadlines, and will keep you one step ahead of your competition. 3. ‘We don’t have the budget’ Every business should set aside at least 5 – 10% of revenue for marketing every year. But marketing doesn’t have to be expensive. There are hundreds of low cost ways to promote your business, from promotional t-shirts (everyone loves a useful freebie!) to blogs – items that either evoke a response or that customers get to keep. Word of mouth is obviously one of the best forms of public marketing. It also helps to use a variety of different marketing methods; just ensure you have a strong message with a clear...

How to Turn Failure Into Your Biggest Online Business Success

“Every adversity carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit” according to Napoleon Hill. Our failures are indeed the most fertile seeds of our future success. If we plant them. To understand this, we have to understand why things go wrong. We have to learn the lesson from the bad experience. Everything happens for a reason. Unfortunately, when adversity hits, we’re usually so busy feeling sorry for ourselves or trying to recover that we don’t stop to think about the reason behind the event. So we never learn the lesson. We never get the opportunity to plant the seed. We also get so busy in life, so caught up in meeting the demands of today, that we often miss the “seeds” that are dropped in our path. This is especially true when times are tough. I’ve been having some significant struggles lately, related to my businesses. I’ve tried to practice what I preach and remain positive and focused. But, as the great Jim Rohn says, “Do what I say, not what I do.” It’s hard at times for even the most seasoned personal growth teacher to handle situations the way she knows she should. In the midst of my struggles I took my kids to a nature conservatory. They were having a great time running around and exploring. There was a big window you could sit by and watch the birds in the trees. I noticed a lady sitting there holding her young daughter. The little girl was beautiful. She was confined to a wheelchair that was accompanied by more medical gadgets than I could comprehend....

How to Turn Setbacks Into Success

We all experience setbacks, and it would be nice if we didn’t. However, given that they are part of life, for me as a coach the question when I’m working with people is, ‘how can we turn setbacks into success?’ Over the years it’s become clear to me that a number of things can make all the difference. So here’s what will make that difference? 1. Turn the Setback into Feedback Firstly, it is important to realise that a setback is just feedback. One of the most obvious kinds of setback is when something changes and you know you’ve got to do something different. But it’s worth being clear about the kind of feedback such a setback is offering. Sometimes the feedback is coming from outside – the world has changed and you need to change too. An example, would be when you learn that a company is downsizing. You haven’t done anything differently but the world is different and that is having an impact on you. Other times, the feedback is the result of something that you have done which has produced a change – you have an affair and your partner decides to leave. However people don’t have to have done anything different to create setbacks. They may have just done the same thing as usual, and they’ve done that so many times, that now there is a change that was unanticipated. For instance they’ve smoked the same number of cigarettes every day and eventually they find they have some kind of serious illness – that’s feedback too. If you regard any setback as just feedback, it...
