What Does it Mean to “Push Your Reset Button?”

Many electrical or electronic products have reset buttons. You usually push the reset button on a computer, a garbage disposal or other device, when everything else you’ve tried hasn’t worked and it’s stuck. The analogy to people is clear. We get stuck too. We have pain. We get depressed. We paint ourselves into corners. We get used to doing things in ways that no longer serve us. We get used to seeing situations from one perspective, even though there are plenty of other ways to see them. When you push your reset button you open up the possibility of resolving what’s stuck. As a coach, a lot of the work I do with clients is to help them get unstuck so that they can achieve what they want to achieve, but haven’t been able to. I loosen up my clients’ assumptions and perceptions by asking powerful questions. I ask them to look at a situation from various perspectives so that they can see things differently. Usually my clients gain perspective and self-awareness through this process. They also let go of what no longer serves them. What no longer serves them can include: negative self-talk, incorrect perceptions, old habits, old beliefs, being stuck, and a host of other things that keep them from being who they want to be. This allows them to move forward and achieve their goals. As an acupuncturist, a lot of the work I do with clients is to help get their energy unstuck so that they can be free of what ails them. This is another way of pushing the reset button. An acupuncture treatment...

What Exactly Does “Patent Pending” Mean Anyway?

What does it mean to be patent pending? Think of standing in a very long line to purchase a ticket to see a movie. Only this line will take you about a year to get to the counter. Once you get there, you will be able to pony up the price of admission. And afterwards you make your way to the theater and sit through the trailers patiently waiting for the movie to begin. Only these trailers can take 2-3 years or longer. On top of that, there is no guarantee that you will even like the movie. Behold, the patent process. Working backwards, the term patent pending means that your rights begin from the day you place your patent application in the mail. And from that date forward, any competitor who makes, uses, or sells a competing product which infringes the claims of your patent will be liable to you for either: the amount of profit he makes, the amount of money you lose, a reasonable licensing fee the judge deems fair, and other factors. This holds true, amazingly, even despite the fact that an Examiner at the USPTO has even laid eyes on your patent application. This remains true even though your patent has not been granted. So now you ask: how? Damages for patent infringement are retroactive back to the filing date of the original patent application. However, this is all contingent upon one small detail: your patent application must be approved. As a result, you cannot file a lawsuit against anyone until you have an official patent in hand. If your patent application is rejected,...

What Does the Organic Label Really Mean?

Thanks to the ‘Organic’ labels, the consumers can now spare themselves the trouble of going through the list of ingredients on a product’s packet in order to decide whether it is organic or not. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has introduced a few national standards that need to be met before companies can use the term “organic” for their food items. Any product labeled ‘Organic’ assures that it is created without the use of artificial hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, bio energy, or irradiation. The farmers involved in the agriculture of organic foods are not only required to abide by certain water and soil conservation mechanisms, but also need to give a benign treatment to animals. The Definition of Organic It may be strange yet interesting to note that marking a food item as organic does not necessarily indicate that the food is healthful and nutritive. The USDA does not claim that food produced organically has more salubrious benefits than conventional food, but it does assure that such foods do not contain any pesticides or harmful chemicals. Therefore, the picky consumers, who pay a lot of heed to nutritional values of everything they eat, are still required to read labels attentively in order to decide how nutritious their diet is going to be. Another interpretation conveys that the term ‘organic’ does not mean ‘natural.’ All it means is that USDA has approved the food. USDA’s Steps towards Creating Organic Foods These days, the USDA makes the use of state and private agencies in order to carry out inspections on food companies to certify them to market organic foods. However,...

What Is Zionism And What Does It Mean To Me?

After being exiled from their ancestral homeland in the year 70 A.D., Jews spread out all over the world, to live in other countries. During the years of this exile the Jewish peopled faced much persecution and inequality. The future of the Jewish people of the Diaspora was bleak, and so they took control of their own destiny. After almost 2,000 years of being without a homeland, from the ashes of the Holocaust, a new type of Jew was born. Prepared to stand up for themselves, these new Jews made a successful democratic country flourish in the desert. To this day, Israel is the only truly democratic country in the Middle East with freedom for all its inhabitants. The story of Zionism begins in the late nineteenth century. Europe was afire with new ideas sweeping the Western world. For the first time ever people were talking about democracy, equality, and freedom. But it was not clear whether Jews would be counted as equal citizens in the countries they lived in and debate raged on either side and amongst Jews and non-Jews. And then came an event that cast stark clarity on the situation and made many Jews realize this was far more than an academic debate. In 1894 a young French artillery officer was wrongly accused of treason (a crime he was later to be proven innocent of). Theodor Herzel (May 2,1860 – July 3,1904) was the main leader and originator of the Zionist movement. Jews were influenced by many factors that led them to create this movement. One factor was the rising spirit of nationalism in Europe during...
