What Does it Mean to Be Happy?

What is happiness?  What will it take to make you happy?  People all over the world look for what it takes to make them happy in their lives, but it seems like a great many people never quite “find it.” Its my opinion that this is part of the problem.  Happiness isn’t something that’s found.  Happiness isn’t something that finds you either.  If it is something that can be found then where it can be found might surprise you. It’s in your mind.  that’s right, it can be found within the depths of your own mind.  It’s a choice that you make everyday.  When you look around at your life, you make a decision about it.  You decide to be happy with it or you don’t. You can choose to look around at all the small annoyances that you that you face and decide that you because of those, you’re not going to be happy.  A little secret about those little annoyances is that they’re always going to be there.  No matter what you do for a living , or where you live, or how much money you have, if you choose to focus your energy on these things, you’ll likely never find lasting happiness. However on the flip side if you come to the understanding that there are always going to be those little annoyances, you’ll have taken a huge first step toward becoming a happy person.  The good thing about this is that you’ll find that once you start focusing on the things in your life that make you happy, those small annoyances will become much less...

What Does the Green Movement Mean to You?

What does the green movement mean to you? This may seem like a silly question, but it’s a question I have been asking myself lately. There is really no rite answer to this question; it is simply a way of thinking about the hundreds of different things that have become part of the green movement and what is most important in them. An interesting experiment I did was to Google the terms green movement and my home town and sees what comes up. Here in Austin Texas this Google search brings up an interesting series of results. The first thing that comes up is an article about a concert celebrating the green movement in Austin. If you know about Austin this makes some sense, as the self proclaimed music capital of the world we have a concert for just about everything. The sponsor of this green concert was the Yellow Bike Collective, a local group that advocates for bicyclist rites and increasing the ease of transit by bicycle around town. They are a great organization and have done good things for the local biking community here in Austin, but I don’t know that they would qualify as the epitome of the Austin green movement in my mind. While increase the number of people using bikes as a primary means of transportation does take cars of the road and decrease pollution, it is just one piece of a large puzzle. Second on the list is the Travis Count Green Party. Clearly they should be high on the list as they appear to be leaders in the local green movement from...

What Does “Loving Yourself” Mean?

We often hear the phrase “You can’t love anyone else until you love yourself” but what does “Loving yourself” really mean? Only when you know and love yourself are you ready for real loving. 1. Loving yourself means taking care of your SELF. A client once asked me. “I know this probably seems obvious, but what does “loving yourself” mean in real life?” I loved the question because it is not as obvious as it sounds. Loving your “Self” means that you know how to take care of your Self. It means that you take responsibility for your well-being and happiness and figure out what you need to feel good. Taking care of your Self applies to both your physical and emotional self – You become your own caring, loving parent. 2. No one can fill that emptiness inside you – except for you. Do not look to someone else to fill that “hole”. If you are born a human, you will have a human struggle, and that struggle is about filling that emptiness inside. Every one of us deals with that emptiness and we are all faced with making peace with the process. When you expect someone else to make you happy, you are projecting your feelings of incompleteness on another and this will never work. Only you and you alone, can heal your Self. 3. You attract to you who you really are – this is always accurate. Who we really are is stronger than what we say we want. Look at whom you are attracting and take responsibility for that “pull”. Perhaps there’s a lesson that...

What Does it Mean to Be Bilingual?

What are the advantages of growing up with two or more languages? Does bilingualism help or hinder the mental and educational development of children? How can children be helped in their language development? In the last three decades there have been a large number of books and research papers written on the subject of educational and mental development of children who grow up using more than one language. This research is almost unanimously shown that children who are bilingual more creative and successful than other children. In many parts of the world, children grow up using more than one language. When the language on the streets and the markets is different from the language at home, children start using these other languages easily. In many parts of the world, people continue to use these different languages through to their adult life. Sometimes the language of a person’s religion is different from the language used in the home, in many children around the world have lessons to learn the particular language of their relation. In most cities, many different languages are spoken. This is particularly true for other cities in Europe and America, because people from many different parts of the world have come to these places to make a new life for themselves. Some children go through life speaking more than one language quite naturally as they grew up. But in a lot of cases because children are learning a different language at school, they may lose the language of their parents. There are even some parents who can afford to send their children to another country so that...

What Does It Mean to be Spiritual?

I have heard many people ask about the difference between being religious and being spiritual. Those who are religious have chosen an organized religion and follow their doctrine and dogma. Most of the questions regarding their relationship with God are answered by those in positions of authority in their chosen religion. They may live according to the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, the Holy Gita or other such texts. Religions tend to discourage any deviance from the teachings of their holy texts and therefore do not encourage much independent thought about God. Those who follow this path seem to feel very secure in the belief that their leaders know the way to God and will will lead them to him. I do not say this in criticism of this, but only as an observation. I have personally been a member of organized religion and have experienced what I am speaking about. The spiritual person on the other hand is often not involved in organized religion and has much more independent thought about his/her personal relationship with God and where it can lead. The spiritual person tends to be much more free in how they feel about God and what is required of them. They may or may not believe in Heaven and Hell and they often have ideas and beliefs that are quite contrary to that of mainstream religion. They are usually less fearful about a wrathful God and what will happen to them when they leave this earth. Many spiritual people like myself are what is considered “New Age.” This is a very broad term and includes many...
