What Does it Mean to Be Bilingual?

What are the advantages of growing up with two or more languages? Does bilingualism help or hinder the mental and educational development of children? How can children be helped in their language development? In the last three decades there have been a large number of books and research papers written on the subject of educational and mental development of children who grow up using more than one language. This research is almost unanimously shown that children who are bilingual more creative and successful than other children. In many parts of the world, children grow up using more than one language. When the language on the streets and the markets is different from the language at home, children start using these other languages easily. In many parts of the world, people continue to use these different languages through to their adult life. Sometimes the language of a person’s religion is different from the language used in the home, in many children around the world have lessons to learn the particular language of their relation. In most cities, many different languages are spoken. This is particularly true for other cities in Europe and America, because people from many different parts of the world have come to these places to make a new life for themselves. Some children go through life speaking more than one language quite naturally as they grew up. But in a lot of cases because children are learning a different language at school, they may lose the language of their parents. There are even some parents who can afford to send their children to another country so that...

What Does It Mean to be Spiritual?

I have heard many people ask about the difference between being religious and being spiritual. Those who are religious have chosen an organized religion and follow their doctrine and dogma. Most of the questions regarding their relationship with God are answered by those in positions of authority in their chosen religion. They may live according to the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, the Holy Gita or other such texts. Religions tend to discourage any deviance from the teachings of their holy texts and therefore do not encourage much independent thought about God. Those who follow this path seem to feel very secure in the belief that their leaders know the way to God and will will lead them to him. I do not say this in criticism of this, but only as an observation. I have personally been a member of organized religion and have experienced what I am speaking about. The spiritual person on the other hand is often not involved in organized religion and has much more independent thought about his/her personal relationship with God and where it can lead. The spiritual person tends to be much more free in how they feel about God and what is required of them. They may or may not believe in Heaven and Hell and they often have ideas and beliefs that are quite contrary to that of mainstream religion. They are usually less fearful about a wrathful God and what will happen to them when they leave this earth. Many spiritual people like myself are what is considered “New Age.” This is a very broad term and includes many...

What Does Your Cat’s Behavior Mean?

It is not an unusual thing for cats to walk their own path.  They don’t mind the owner as long as they provide food, water, clean litter, and a place to sleep.  However, we also know that cats like to act in ways that let us know something.  Sometimes we just can’t figure out what it is.  We get confused and in spite of our best intentions, we do something that frustrates our cat.  It is no secret that cats and humans don’t speak the same language but there are ways to learn how to communicate. A common thing that cats to do is to push their head into certain objects.  It might be a table leg, your leg or anything else that is firm, easy to go around, and something that does not move or wiggle.  This also happens to your visitors’ legs sometimes! Cats rub their heads against people as a sign of possession.  When doing this, the cat puts a small portion of saliva on the person that, to him, means he owns that person. If he puts some of his saliva on something or someone, it becomes more familiar to him.  Even if you or your friends might not like it this action, it is a way through which the cat tries to cope with the new situation or person.  The cat is putting a mark on different things which allows him feel safer. Although marking objects or people with saliva makes a cat feel more secure, this is a main cause of allergies. Even worse, after you wipe off the saliva your cat will...

What Does Having it All Mean?

Is it possible to have a great relationship and a great career? Do you truly believe you can have both? The answer to that question should get you thinking about what having it all means to you. Everyone’s definition is different. We know that everyone has dreams that they might not share with anyone. We did, and they were mostly about having it all. We wanted the white picket fence and everything else that we had dreamed of. Perhaps you didn’t share your secrets with anyone because you were afraid of the response, “you can’t have it all”. In fact, this one statement that held Kim back for a long time. “I kept thinking that there were so many great things in my life, that maybe you just don’t get everything.” Take some time to think about what “everything” is for you. What is the life you want? What are you doing to create that life? Often times, we focus on “why don’t I have it yet?” This was true for both of us. We couldn’t figure out why we weren’t in fulfilling relationships. We both had a vision of having it all. It was similar in the fact that we both wanted great relationships with men who supported and encouraged us and believed in us. We both wanted to achieve excellence in our professional life and we wanted to be passionate about what we did. We wanted that elusive work-life balance we all talked about. We also wanted to serve others and have meaningful relationships. There were things that were standing in our way and we needed to...
