The most important aspect of being a Leader is Focus because a Leader must be clear about their objectives. A good Leader is able to assess competing priorities and Focus on those that bring them closer to their objective. In fact a Leader’s effectiveness is directly proportional to their ability to Focus. Clarity of purpose and persistence makes achieving their objectives easier. A good Leader develops their ability to concentrate and develops this same ability in their team. Concentration is key to the ability to Focus.
Focus is closely followed by Urgency. Urgency should not be confused with haste. Urgency is purposeful action This action should be deliberate and carried out patiently. Deliberation is not delay but is due diligence and consideration of options. Acting with Urgency is selecting the best option to maximize an opportunity at the most opportune time. Leaders who act with a sense of Urgency are also Leaders who are intelligent. They know what their objective is and have the drive and energy to see it through successfully. This type of Leader is not easily stopped.
This now brings us to the Communication aspects of Leadership. Communication aspects of Leadership fall into purely Communication and then Politics.
Communication alone is a key Leadership skill. Effective communication is the single best skill to avoid a crisis situation. To be an effective communicator does not mean you have to agree with other people. You must however be able to tolerate you differences with them. It is important to note that quite often what is not said is more important than what is said.70% of communication is non-verbal, therefore if you wish to get your message across your expression, body language, tone of voice and gestures must match your message. Keeping a ‘poker face’ when trying to get someone to open up for example is doomed to failure.
Politics is an aspect of communication most often neglected. This is because many Leaders do not like to admit they are in a position of power and authority. They want to remain ‘one of the team’. Down this path lies disaster. Your team expects you to behave like a Leader which means using your power and authority for the good of the team. If a Leader engages in ‘playing politics’ to gain individual success then they should be prepared to die by the same sword. There is always a queue of people waiting to play the same game and the game never end. Politics are a fact of every Leadership position and they are difficult rivers to steer. This leads us on to Integrity as a Leader.
Integrity as a Leader isÂ a another key building block of Leadership. Integrity falls into Intellectual Honesty and Resilience.
Intellectual honesty is vital because as humans we are made up of emotions. Leaders can be persuaded into doing the wrong thing for what seemed at the time a necessity. This is usually the result of ignorance or denial. Leaders who use essentially dishonest means as an assumed key to success are eventually found out. At that point all future doors for opportunity or advancement will be closed to them. Being intellectually honest means that your words and your actions are congruent. Anything less and you will not be trusted as a Leader. The morale of your team is in direct proportion to level of regard your team has for you.
The first step to achieving Resilience as a Leader is when you begin to trust others. By confiding in appropriate mentors you can bond emotionally and gain insight into your actions that will help you develop. In crisis situations or daily routine matters seeking the opinion of team members will strengthen your Resilience. You cannot rely on your own singular knowledge and experience as a Leader if you wish to succeed. All great Leaders have formed Master Mind groups, Henry Ford, Andrew Carniegie right up to Barak Obama. This allows then to recognize when they have failed, learn from it and move on to succeed. If you have never failed then you have never been a true Leader and stretched yourself to see if you can recover from failure.
In conclusion then the key aspects to being a well rounded leader are; Focus, Urgency, Communication, Political Awareness, Intellectual Honesty and Resilience.
